DGT #3: Smaug (The Hobbit)

Smaug is the primary antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He is a powerful, intelligent, malevolent and fearsome dragon who invaded the dwarf kingdom of Erebor 150 years prior to the events described in the novel. In the book/movie, a group of 13 dwarves mounted a quest to take the kingdom back, aided by Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins. Smaug appears in the Hobbit film adaption in the second and third movies. He is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who is the perfect "evil dragon" voice. These people in movies really know what they are doing when it comes to dragon voices.

Where I think Bilbo blew it in the story is by going at Smaug the wrong way. If it were me, I would have told Smaug that I didn't actually want anything to do with the treasure. I just came to hang out with him and see if he would fly me around a bit. Maybe go burn down a village or two. I think Smaug wouldn't have been so evil if people would have just let him keep his treasure and the kingdom. I mean, he earned that shit by conquering the kingdom. Of course he is going to go nuts at people coming into his turf trying to take his money and property. I can't really blame him for his reaction. If Bilbo and company just told him that they came to chill with him, he probably would have been stoked. You just gotta know how to treat dragons the right way. Write that down.

Spoiler alert: Smaug somehow dies in the movie from an arrow to the one tiny area in his body where he is missing a scale. It was a one in a million shot from a dude who had seemingly never even shot a crossbow before and had a terrible ponytail. I mean, of course he is going to score a perfect hit to the jugular. Totally makes sense. The movie was pretty much over for me at that point.

Anyway, here's a Smaug quote:

Smaug: There is something about you. Something you carry, something made of gold... but far more PRECIOUS...
Smaug: [sees him] There you are, Thief in the Shadows!
