DGT #6: Fing Fang Foom

Posted by Master of Drankgons on

The most enduring character of the long-gone age of monsters, Fing Fang Foom had first appeared in comic books published by Marvel Comics created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby. This kick-ass dragon has a list of amazing abilities, from super human strength to extreme durability, regenerating healing factor, acid mist breadth, telepathy, supersonic flight via wings, prolonged lifespan, gifted intellect and as if these weren’t enough, he possesses advanced alien technology too. Fin Fang Foom has fought with a number of superheroes like Iron Man, Fantastic Four et al. He ranks 99, in the IGN’s list of Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.

Making his debut in Strange Tales #89 (Oct. 1961) during the Silver Age of Comic Books, Fin Fang Foom appeared during what fans and historians call Marvel Comics' "pre-super hero period," which would not become integrated into Marvel's mainstream fictional continuity until the 1970s.

Writer-editor Stan Lee's inspiration for the character's name was the title of the 1934 movie version of the long-running British stage musical Chu Chin Chow. As Lee described in 2005:

When I was a kid, I loved going to the movies. When I say a kid, I mean 10, 11, 12 years old. And there was one movie I'd seen. I remember nothing about it except the name. It took place in China, I believe, and the name of the movie was Chu Chin Chow. Now I have no idea what it meant — I don't know if it was somebody's name or a country or a city, but I never forgot that name. Those three words just stuck in my memory: Chu Chin Chow. So when I was looking for the name of a monster, I remember Chu Chin Chow ... and that particular meter, that beat, somehow led to Fin Fang Foom. (Transcript of 2005 interview)

What a fucking name. I had never actually heard of this guy until I started doing some research on dragons. Which has led me to wonder: HOW HAS MARVEL NOT MADE THIS GUY A SIGNATURE VILLAIN/CHARACTER BY NOW???? He is way cooler than say, I don't know, Loki! And he appears to have been a villain in the Iron Man cartoon long ago.  Here is a link to some guy talking about his background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xngJlwOrjIs

I think my favorite part about this guy (besides his name, obvi) is that his main weakness is being extremely vulnerable to an unidentified herbal leaf found only in China. Apparently, this herb is capable of quickly putting Foom to sleep for extremely long periods of time, perhaps indefinitely, as long as it remains in his general vicinity. Now I see why he isn't more popular. I envision any fight with him going sorta like this:

"I -- Have -- AWAKENED!"
-- Fin Fang Foom

(Hey Foom, suck herb... BOOM! ASLEEP. Planet saved.)
