Ok, so this week's profile isn't technically a dragon, but I think most of you will remember the epic purple witch dragon from Sword in the Stone. Words cannot express the love I had for this movie as a child. If you were born in the 80's then you probably watched this movie at least 1,000 times. Guess I am dating myself, but whatever. My kids will definitely be force fed this movie someday.
My favorite scene from the movie was always the magic shape-shifting battle between Merlin and Madam Mim. I would rate this battle scene up there as one of the top 5 movie wizard battles of all time - maybe even the top one. Even though this scene initially traumatized me a bit, it's so good. Watching it now still brings a tear to my eye. Some great animal choices and counter-choices in there.
I love the set up too. Madam Mim goes over the ground rules for the battle with Merlin and then promptly disappears to break the main rule. One of her other rules is that there will be "no make believe things like pink dragons," so naturally, she later turns into a purple dragon in hopes of finishing off Merlin's goat form. Too bad Merlin don't play that. When it seems that that battle is over, Merlin proceeds to one up her by turning into a rare disease germ, thereby ending the battle in epic style. Well played, Merlin.
I think where Mim blew it was turning into a purple dragon. Come on, this isn't Shrek here. Should have chosen a better color dragon, like I don't know... green, gold, or black? Good try though, Mim. I applaud your efforts, even though you just reinforced the age old theme of cheaters never prosper.
I tried super hard to find a good version of the full battle scene online, but this is the best one that I came up with: https://www.youtube.com/
I'm guessing that the lack of availability of other high quality videos of this scene is why this video has around 90K views. Disney has a short clip of the battle that's much better, but they cut the clip short, including the part WHERE SHE TURNS INTO A DRAGON. What the hell, Disney. No one clicked on that link to only watch half of the freaking battle. I want to see the dragon. Show me the dragon, Disney. SHOW... ME... THE... DRAGON!!!!
(Update) I found a better version of the battle scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_VpkXd1TKA&nohtml5=False
WHATEVER DISNEY, I'M STILL MAD AT YOU.
