DGT #29: Yoshi

Ah yes, the cute and lovable dinos-errrr-dragon: Yoshi. Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World as a native male dinosaur, whom Mario or Luigi could ride on to eat enemies and otherwise navigate Dinosaur Land more quickly and easily. I guess technically he is a dinosaur, BUT he eats things, can breathe fire, has spikes on his head, and can fly on occasion. So he's basically a dragon in my mind.

Also, his character is based on a dragon from another video game. Yes, the inspiration for Yoshi can be traced back to the green dragon Tamagon in the 1984 video game Devil World. Coincidentally, both are green lizards that hatch from eggs and can eat enemies with their large mouth, and also emit the same noise when they hatch. Here is a picture of Tamago.... The resemblance is uncanny.

Yoshi was one of favorite video game characters growing up, and by far the best racer on Super Mario Kart for Nintendo 64 (THE definitive Mario Kart). If you've ever played a Mario game, you’ll know one thing: There is no greater joy than hitting a question block and finding a Yoshi egg. Nothing else comes close: fire-flowers, frog-suits, invincibility stars… not one. Why? Because Yoshi is the ultimate side-kick, a sweet dragon that you can ride around and eat things and kick ass.

I actually cried as a child when I found out that Yoshi was not real. As in, I legit sat off by myself on the playground for a good half hour tearing up about it with a Nintendo Power magazine in my hand that had Yoshi on the cover. That pain was real, so real that I still vividly remember it to this day. Fortunately, Yoshi has lived on in our minds and on the TV screen. Kinda makes me wonder why there aren't more awesome cartoon dragon video game characters out there... I mean Spyro, really? Yoshi would crush Spyro in a second. In fact, he would eat him for breakfast. And then shoot out purple flames to destroy everything in his path. What a boss.
