Shenron (i.e., "Divine Dragon" or "Dragon God") is a magical dragon from Dragon Ball Z and its various spinoffs. He is named after the spiritual dragon of the same name in Chinese mythology, known as the master of storms and a bringer of rain.
Shenron can be summoned by gathering all seven of the Dragon Balls of Earth. He dwells in the fiery center of the Earth's core when the Dragon Balls are not being used. Whenever the Dragon Calls are collected and he is called, he will arrive to bestow any wish as long as it does not exceed the power of his creator. He also cannot (or will not) grant the same wish more than once. The Dragon Balls cannot be used for one year after a wish is made, as they turn to stone. Once he has granted his one wish, he returns to his fiery home to sleep.
I admit that I used to watch Dragon Ball Z back in the day, but I would always get so confused by the show. Like I had no idea that the entire purpose of collecting the dragon balls was to summon a master dragon named Shenron to grant one freaking wish to the person with them. Either I was really stupid as a kid or they did not do a good job of explaining this in the show. It seemed like it took an entire season of the show for one person to look for and collect one Dragon Ball, and I definitely never got to see Shenron on an episode. Thank goodness I decided to just stop watching it once I realized that nothing ever happened and that they had to collect seven Dragon Balls. Yikes. After a little bit of research, I realize what a small portion of the show I actually watched. Here is a break-down of the King Piccolo Saga, if you have an hour.
Back to Shenron, what a pathetic existence for a dragon. Shenron stays asleep in the Earth's core until he is summoned to grant someone's wish. And then goes back to sleep! That doesn't sound very dragon-like at all. Where is his deep-rooted desire to get treasure and eat sheep and fly around the world and breath fire? At least he is cool-looking. Let's focus more on his appearance and less on what he does. Here are some more sweet images of him from the Web, and a great quote:
"It's unwise to be rude to a dragon."
— Shenron warning some dude named Sorbet for yelling at him.
He's definitely a bad ass dragon. He just needs to better realize his potential. I am setting up a chat between him and Smaug about how to be more dragon-like. No more of this granting wishes only when called upon and then going back to sleep garbage.
